A review and report of my 2011 earnings working from home in South Africa and online, and how 2011 compared to 2010.
Happy New Year for 2012!
So how was 2011 for you? (Perhaps tell me in a comment in the
guest book of the blog on this site)
So how did my 2011 earnings compare to my 2010 earnings?
Well, my passive income from Adsense has increased beautifully - and this is exactly what I expected to happen because of more articles written and added to my sites. Having more articles on your sites means that there are more words to match search terms when people are searching for something on search engines like Google. And if your website or blog page appears on page 1 or 2 of Google search results, there is a greater chance your site will be visited than if the search results for your site were only on page 3, 4 or worse.
If getting Adsense cheques in the post in South Africa, South African Adsense publishers have to earn R1 000 in a month to get that cheque about 2 months later, otherwise the earnings get added until you earn at least R1 000, before your Adsense cheque gets posted.
See my monthly Adsense earnings since August 2008 to see how, in general, my earnings have increased over time. I am pleased to note that in December 2010 I earned only R578 compared to December 2011 earnings of R1 012. December is not usually a good month due to it being holidays, but at least I made that R1 000 target in one month. It is not the most I ever made in one month with Adsense. The most I have so far made with Adsense in one month was R1 866 in August 2011.
I have also come to know a lot more about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in 2011 than I knew in 2010, and this has helped me when I write articles with content that I hoped would get page 1 Google search results. Many articles I wrote for myself, as well as articles I wrote for clients got page 1 Google search results for their content, in 2011.
Getting local clients in East London and in South Africa for our freelance services of web design, SEO, and writing has gone a little better in 2011 than in 2010, but we still need to find the time to market more to improve this further.
Ideally we need to increase our passive income to have more time over for working at marketing our freelance services. Earning passive income means that most of the work has already been done, or only very little work needs to be done each month, but you still earn an income each month.
Available time for more marketing, as well as our low prices compared to the prices of most other freelancers, seem to be the biggest hurdles we need to address and overcome in 2012.
One particular freelance job we have been grateful for, a job that has lasted for a little over two years now, is
doing freelance work for a personal injury attorney in Florida, the U.S. We are paid by the hour and do all
kinds of different freelance jobs for the client. These jobs or projects include: html web design, WordPress site set
up and customization, SEO, SEO writing, writing, copywriting, keyword research, Internet research, medicine and
defective product recalls and warnings research, competitor website analysis, domain name suggestions and purchases,
doing updates to sites, photo and image sourcing, photo and image editing, banner ad design, website header banner design,
and more. We do not have degrees for this kind of work. We are self-taught, from having read
free information on the Internet. If you put in a lot of effort, you can do this kind of work too. I knew nothing
about these kinds of freelance services, just 4 years ago.
Working with this Florida personal injury attorney has taught us so much. We have further developed our knowledge of web design, SEO, writing, research and marketing. We also love the fact that simply having a computer and Internet, and being prepared to read and learn a lot, means that just about anybody can work right from their own home in South Africa (or anywhere else) for anybody in the world.
We have also learned a lot about the law in Florida and it has been interesting indeed - makes me think I should have
made the effort to try and become a lawyer, or at least a paralegal. I had not realised how interesting it could be.
We have also learned a lot about accidents, slip and fall accidents, car accidents, motorcycle accidents,
construction site accidents,
brain injury, spinal injury, and medicine and defective product warnings, recalls and
lawsuits. With his over 30 years in personal injury law experience, and being Florida Bar Board Certified in Civil
Trial, and because we have come to call him a friend, we certainly do recommend him as a personal injury attorney for
anyone injured at the fault of another in the Florida or New York areas.
Have a look at some of his sites and learn more about how he may be able to help you if you have been injured at the
fault of another, especially if you live in the U.S. of course.
Florida Lawyer and Injury Risks
Looking at these two sites also gives you an idea of the type of work we do.
Other news and improvements in 2011:
Have come to prefer doing WordPress (.org) sites and customization more than doing html sites for our clients, not just because we enjoy it, but because we like giving our clients excellent work, and with the wonderful platform of WordPress, we can do this more easily. The clients benefit too of course.
We started a few new sites
of our own, including
setting up my 12 year old and 14 year old sons with their own .co.za
sites - yes, now they are also bloggers! One son earned R16 in his first month, and the other earned R39. We have set
up some new sites for ourselves to either market ourselves more,
try earn more from Adsense, and also to try help our fellow South Africans who also wish to work from home, or who
need to market themselves more, or who need ideas on how to earn some extra income for themselves.
Conclusion:
It has been a busy year, 2011, and we hope that 2012 will be just as busy, but that 2012 will see us being able to take some more time off here and there, while still being able to pay our bills and monthly living expenses (we did not close at all during the holiday season, and have not been away on holiday for even one night in about 3 years.) Working from home can be tough and tiring, but we do enjoy it, and do also know that many people who are struggling to find work, or who need to earn some extra income, can also work from home, if they only put in the effort required.
