This website currently costs me about R200 per year;

This site has made me about R900
over the last 3 months,
and a bit before that too;

This site is about 13 months old now, (it's now January 2011) and made me next to nothing in the first few months, then earnings began to increase;

If this website continues to make me roughly R300 per month, that's R3 600 per year for an investment of just R200 per year.

for my American visitors (since my sites receive as many visitors from America as they do from South Africa, sometimes even more visitors from America,) a currency converter tells me that the amounts above are currently $504 per year for an investment of just $28 per year.

Please also see an update (4 months later) at the bottom of this article.

Now, my maths is not great but I'm sure that's a huge percentage increase on my investment. I do know that making R3 400 profit on a R200 investment in one year is great, and that receiving 18 times what I paid is a fantastic return on investment!

What's more, is that with a bit of time and effort, I can increase that monthly R300 income, and still pay only R200 per year!

So, how can a website make me money?

How this site makes me money:

I have a Google Adsense account and am a Google Adsense publisher. It's free to join the Google Adsense program. I put a code into the pages of my website, where I want Adsense ads to appear, the ads appear, if what the ads say catch a person visiting my site's attention, that person clicks the ad to go visit the site to get more information, and I earn a commission because I was displaying somebody's ad on the pages of my website.

I have less than 25 pages of content on this site at the moment (late January 2011) and I can increase my return on investment in a number of ways, one of the main ways simply being to add more pages of content to my site.

Imagine how my R300 per month could increase if I had 250 articles on here instead of around just 25, and if I spent more time on marketing this site. Adding more articles I've written, and marketing the site does not have to cost me anything more than the R200 per year I'm already paying, other than time and effort, and an Internet connection.

Imagine if I had 2 500 articles on here instead of just 25. Obviously that would need a bigger hosting package, costing me a bit more than just R200 per year, but, wow, it would be so worth it, especially if having 2 500 articles in this site really directly translated to earning R30 000 per month.

Hm, if I could add 10 new one-page articles to this site every day, I'd have 2 400 articles on here in just 8 months from now.

It takes a while to write a lot of unique content articles though, so I just do it in my spare time for now. If I didn't also have to work for a living (from home, providing web design, on-page SEO, photo editing and writing services) I would love to dedicate more time to this site, to increase my return on investment more rapidly. But if I keep adding more content to this site whenever I can, and keep promoting my pages on this site in any number of at least 42 different free ways that I know of, perhaps one day I'll be able to spend less time on work (the web design, on-page SEO, photo editing and writing services Tony and I provide) and spend more time on having fun adding content to this site. It's passive income. I can earn from this site while I'm sleeping!

Disclaimer: I am in no way telling you what you can earn by setting up a website or blog, adding content to it, and displaying Adsense ads on it. The musings, figures, calculations and future predictions here are just my own. You may earn less than me, you may earn more. A lot of how much you can earn from a site or blog depends on how much content you can add to it, what the topics are that you write about, how your site is designed or optimized for search engines, how much keyword research you do, and on how much marketing of your site you do.

Does this site really cost me only R200 per year? Well, obviously I need a computer and Internet connection, but I need a computer and Internet connection anyway, for my work. Many people have computers and an Internet connection and don't use the Internet to earn some extra income - they use it for their children's homework assignments and school projects, they use it to watch You Tube videos, or they use it for keeping up to date on FaceBook.

How much would it cost you to set up a similar site?

Well, the roughly R200 per year is our service provider price for hosting and .co.za domain registration of a site this size. If you ordered .co.za hosting and domain registration through us, where we do the work for you of ordering, arranging and setting up your domain registration and hosting, for a site this size, we would charge you about R480 per year.

Then, you'd have to have a website designed, or design it yourself, and upload it to the host server.

Tony and I designed this site ourselves. We're self taught web designers and you can be too, if you take the time to learn. We started just three years ago. We'll be 51 and 42 this year. We not only design our own sites but have a growing portfolio of sites we've designed for other people.

Other than our hosting and domain registration and renewal fees, and having a computer and Internet connection, the only other cost is time and effort. But we could get the monthly amount we already receive from this site up to whatever amount we're happy with, and then not have to do any more work regards this site, other than renew the hosting and domain yearly, and still receive a monthly income from it!

This site does not yet have too many articles on it, and we don't yet spend that much time on promoting it, so we're very happy with the return on investment for the little amount of time and effort put in so far.

There are easier and cheaper, even free alternatives to having a site similar to this to make money from Adsense, where you don't have to know how to design a website. We have some of these sites ourselves, but as they don't make us as much money as this site, from Adsense, we feel happiest with this kind of site, even though it could be the topics on this site that people are searching for a lot that makes it more popular than most of our other sites (if our other easier, cheaper or free sites had vey similar content maybe they would also make as much as this one does, and, if this site had other content topics that were not getting as much attention as the current content does, this site might make us less money.)

You can use a free online tool like the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to type in words and phrases related to a topic that you know a bit about, or that ypu don't mind spending a bit of time researching, and see roughly how many people use those words on a search engine like Google to look for information each month. The list of results that come up usually give other words that are related to the topic, and their monthly search volume figures, that can give you further ideas of what to write about. If you take one of those related words or phrases that come up in the search results, and type it in at the top again to do a new search, you get even more related words and phrases coming up in the results. Remember that many of the high monthly search volumes have high competition too (lots of sites out there that deal with that topic) and you may want to choose some of the smaller monthly seach volume ones that often have less competition, especially when just starting out. If targetting, say, South Africa, remember to choose South Africa in the geographical drop down list, so that you don't just get global search volume results.

See an example of a site that is easy to load content to without having to know how to design websites our Make Money Use Internet blogspot blog that is totally free, no hosting fees, no domain registration. You don't get to have a totally unique domain name though, as anyone that gets a site like this will have their website address ending in .blogspot.com

A site that is not free, where you can have a totally unique website address, but is very affordable, is a site like this our Online Flea Market WordPress site. It's also one where you don't have to know how to design a website. You can choose from over 1 000 free WordPress themes (how the site looks) and get a site like that set up through us if you like, for just R420 per year, including .co.za domain registration, hosting, upload to the host server, and more.

You would just receive your log in details from us, can log in, start writing your content and publish it, or copy and paste writing you've already done, and publish it, on your own unique domain name .co.za site.

Links to free online WordPress lessons (for if you get stuck learning how to use your WordPress site,) details, further information and an order form can be found on this page of our main site.

Also, learn more about the basics needed to make money online (even if you have a computer, Internet connection, and use a totally free site or join free online writing sites, how are you going to receive the monies you earn?)

Using Adsense is also not the only way I can make money from this site. I can also:

Advertise a service I'm offering, or a product I sell

Charge for others to advertise on this site, if I'm receiving a ton of daily visitors

Join other affiliate programs and display their ads on my site (from which I earn a commission if that site is visited and a service is used or a product bought)

Link to pages on other sites I have, or to my articles on online writing sites, giving those pages more exposure

Sell this site if I wanted to, content and all (the new owner would replace my Adsense ads with their own).

Conclusion: Having a website or blog, which can be extremely affordable or even free, is a great asset not just for professionals wishing to gain more exposure for their business, but also for anyone wishing to make money from home, or wishing to earn a little extra income in their spare time.

UPDATE: (Early May 2011) This site now, 4 months after writing the above article, costs me a little more than R200 per year since I added more host server space so I could add a blog to this site - but this means I can add many more pages of content, here on this site, or on the blog. I have not yet added anywhere near the amount of pages I would like to, but I now have the space to do it. I also like using WordPress blogs and wanted to add a WordPress blog to this site.

So, this site, with more hosting space now, and with its blog, now costs me R313 per year, instead of the old R200 per year, but it's earning me a bit more per month than it used to before. My average earnings from this site over the past 4 months are currently about R399 per month.

You can see some of my Adsense earnings of some of my other individual sites earnings on my Make Money Use Internet blog.
