Should you sell the articles you write or put them on your own site? Which way of making money from
your articles will make you more money?
I recently wrote an article entitled
How to make money from a book you can't get published and I published that article on the blog of this
site.
In it I describe how much money this site and its blog have made me in a six-month period
from August 2011 to January 2012.
The earnings were from writing and adding articles to this site
(136 articles since starting this site and by the end of January 2012), and placing Adsense ads on the
same pages as the articles.
Writing that article made me think of writing this one.
Now it would be nice to know if writing and selling your articles to clients (as a freelance writer), or
to online writing sites, or to magazine publishers will make you more money than if you publish
your articles on your own site and monetize your website or blog pages with Adsense ads or other ads.
Well, it is not that easy to work out which method of making money from your articles will make you more
money, but when working it out, you made find tips I can offer useful for what you should think about to help
you decide which is best for you, or help you decide which method might make you more money:
An important aspect of making money from the articles that you write can revolve around how patient you are.
You also need to consider that selling an article (with full rights) to a client or an online writing site
(that in turn sells them to their clients), while possibly paying you better and more quickly, also means that
you earn from each article only once.
Publishing your articles on your own site and monetizing your site with Adsense or other ads, may not earn you
much at all. You may also have to pay a little attention to some basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or even
possibly use paid methods of advertising to get your site and articles noticed more, but on the other hand your
articles can continue earning you money as long as your site is live on the Internet (your site hosting and domain
fees are paid up), and having your articles online on your own site for a long time may mean that, over time, they
may actually earn you more than had you sold them just once each.
Another advantage of writing for your own site instead of for a client or for an online writing site is that
there are no client or online writing site rules that you have to follow, and you can write about almost anything.
Being able to write about almost anything may mean that you write quite a few articles, quite quickly.
Then of course there is also the lovely advantage of being able to also mention on your site perhaps a service
you offer or a product you sell. When people visit your site to read your articles, they may also be interested
in the service you offer or the product you sell, especially when that service or product relates to what you
write about on your site.
Selling each article you write (to a client or to an online writing site) is not all bad, though. If clients
or writing sites (or magazine publishers) like your style of writing, you may be able to regularly sell your articles.
You can also consider doing both: sell some articles, as well as write some articles for your own site.
